Olisiko joillakin muilla?

Otamme esimerkin yhdestä maailman suosituimmista blogista. Tarkasteluun siis Boingboing. Se reagoi maanjäristykseen vasta 27.12. 2004 klo 02:09:42 AM. pohtimalla otsikolla Data alert network could have helped in Asia tsunami kuinka maanjäristyksestä olisi ennakkovaroitusjärjestelmällä voitu tiedottaa ajoissa.

27.12. klo 08:06:53 AM, 36 tuntia tapahtumien alusta, heidän kauttaan tuli tietoa bloggareista Sri Lankasta, Thaimaasta ja Malesiasta, yhteensä 12 eri linkkiä, jotka pitivät sisällään kuvia, videokuvaa ja kertomuksia. Tuhon laajuus, 24000 kuollutta tuolloin oli tietotoimistojen antama. Blogi ohjasi samalla antamaan apua 27.12 perustettuun: Tsunamihelp -blogiin.

Boing Boing viittasi World Changing Comiin, joka oli vuorokausi aiemmin julkaissut tällaisen uutissähkeen:

Sumatra Earthquake: largest in 40 years, thousands feared dead

Ensimmäiset raportit tulivat seuraavana aamuna 8:35 otsikolla Surviving the Tidal Wave - A First-Hand Report, joka piti sisällään Sri Lankan pääministerin vetoomuksen.

Hän kertoo Dec 26, 2004 at 10:03 PM seuraavaa:

"Thus, currently nearly penniless, passport-less, travel insurance-less etc. at the moment. But at the hospital everything is free including email access. Unfortunately, the US embassy has not been very helpful in contrast to other embassies and we don't know much logistically in terms of loans, passports, retreiving our stuff, etc. The ambassador to Sweden personally visited all the Swedes (several were on our boat trip)."

Things are absolute madhouse here. Looks like a marketplace with tents and booths - but nothing is being sold just given away. Thousands of people here sorting through embassy stuff here. The government of Thailand and the people here have been absolutely wonderful providing free clothing, water, toiletries, food, accomodations, flights back to Bangkok and on and on. There are bulletin boards with lists of survivors here in addition to all the missing people photos and dead bodies photos (for help with identification). It reminds me that only two days ago I was just happy to just be alive.

I flew to Bangkok today (a necessity as we had to go to the US Embassy in person) via the Royal Thai Air Force. The C-130 was reserved for injured travelers and was about a quarter full of people in stretchers. The Swedish woman next to me had befriended a severely injured Finnish boy whom was traveling alone.

Phuket Tsunami - FIRST HAND SURVIVOR STORIES oli blogi, jossa "Rick Von Feldt describes first hand what happend when a tsunami hit Phuket, Thailand on December 26, 2004. This site also includes other FIRST HAND STORIES of survival - Scroll to bottom to see first post. Most recent is on top - I would really enjoy contributions to this blog either from those reading or from individuals who also experienced what I experienced. Send to: rvonfeldt@yahoo.com"

Hänen ensimmäinen postauksensa tuli Monday, December 27, 4:00 in the afternoon. 28 hours after the Tsunami hit Phuket, Thailand.

Seuraavan päivän blogissaan hän kertoo kokemuksistaan ja lainaa mm. lukemaansa Yahoo-artikkelia, josta hän sanoo, että juuri näin se tapahtui : "The water went back, back, back, so far away, and everyone wondered what it was — a full moon or what? Then we saw the wave come, and we ran," said Katri Seppanen, who was in Thailand, on Phuket island's popularPatong beach."

We could see that people in the hotels were climbing as quickly as they could. The huddled on the roofs of all the hotels. And down below - we could see boats and autos and everything smaller being thrased again and again against buildlings. It looked like a bathtup with lots of small toys - surreal - but real enough."

"I walked down to the beach area - just to the edge where I knew I was high enough - yet farther down from the hotel. I stood there and watched as people ran "in between waves" to get to the street that ran up the hill. Most made it. But if you were far enough down the beach - you didn't realize how quickly the receded water would come back. Some got caught - and we sat and watched horror as the waves rushed back, grabbing the feet of people and throwing them up in the air like little rubber ducks. Most survived. A few did not."

Varhain maanantai-aamuna hän raportoi:

Over in Phi Phi Island (a yet smaller island away from Phuket) - hundreds of people drowned. Many locals had relatives there. And they have not heard from them.

Alanin ja monien muidenkin blogien olemassaolosta laajalle yleisölle tiedotti tosin myöhemmin mm. : http://www.command-post.org/nk/
